Thanks for this super interesting piece. My hot take on things also has a Venn diagram so I’m glad you bought yours up. To me Incels appear to very much be subsets of the schizoid personality disorder/mental health category that Columbiners and other mass shooters belong, but with a twist for the modern age. These guys are loners with suppressed outer affect, inadequate social skills but a rich inner fantasy life, in which they compensate for their lack of real-world success and social capital with fantasies of revenge and unlimited power: the classic ‘I’ll show them all’ attitude found in mass shooters. Except, in the age of the internet, they have the ability to connect to groups who reinforce and feed their sense of entitlement, in echo chambers such as incel groups. Shooters always have a manifesto, but now they feel backed by a group one, that justifies their actions by blaming specifically women, instead of the traditional school mates, teachers etc. ‘They made me do it because they wouldn’t recognise my specialness.’ In this way these young/immature and socially inadequate men, many with mental health and personality disorder afflictions, typically schizoid, have had their disenfranchisement mainstreamed through online social networks, and their rage channelled into what seems to be a generally accepted targeting of women who are seen as the group who thwart their interior monologue of power and success with their real world rejection and ‘just won’t let them be great’. (By generally accepted, I mean that Incel has now become part of our lexicon with the insult casually flung at any man who gripes against women, almost as a joke and the recognition of the term as a legitimate form of self-identification among certain men). Thanks for your work keep up the great writing.
